A different time altogether. A time when three young families were forced to squat an empty hotel for somewhere to live. I wonder will we see these days return?

I absolutely love this cover image, from Sing (‘Britain’s Folk Song Magazine’) No.55, June 1966. It’s just one of the lovely things which arrived in the post today, along with heaps of newspapers, pamphlets and magazines from the 1960s. I will scan them all up in a post exam world.

A few things I forgot….

Our recent review of 2010 included vanishing penguins, trucks at the Dail, famous Italians in Tallaght, Mary Byrne and spraypainted Ballymun towers. Since writing it, it’s dawned on me I forgot a couple of things. 1: Culchies of the year: Crystal Swing, to the credit, were actually lovely people and did a lot for charity. [...]

Every Christmas Eve, a group of my friends organise an event they’ve taken to calling ‘Real Dubs’. Like 28 Days Later, the streets of Dublin empty as those from beyond the pale return to their farms and creameries, leaving just us. Waking up in a friends flat over in Smithfield, I was half tempted to [...]

Someone picked me up a series of 1916 press cuttings from the English papers of the day at Christmas. These two are great. Some of you may have seen the images before, but for those who haven’t, look at the man just casually observing the situation in the first, while in the second we have [...]

Redrawing Dublin

“A large five-bedroom outer-suburban house is not necessarily the first preference housing choice of all; for the real urbanist it rarely is” -Page 255. God, any book that interviews Liam Carroll (“Dublin Bus: Needs Competition”) and sports journalist Bertie Ahern T.D (“Liberty Hall: Should Be Gone”) is surely not worth reading you’re asking? Mod Fest April 2011

What better way to kick off the Post Xmas postings than with a post on Mod Fest, which is without a doubt going to be one of the most anticipated events of 2011. Jointly organised by Sean Fletcher and Modern Media, the two nights of cracking music is a steal for €49.50. I’ve previously written [...]

Here are the 2011 League of Ireland fixtures, just published today. The first week will see two Dublin sides away outside the capital (the Saints in Galway and Bohs in Bray), Rovers at home to Dundalk and a Dublin derby (pfft!) between Sporting Fingal and the Belfielders. Excellent. Get the calendar out.

New Years Eve 2010

The Warehouse Collective will be throwing their third, and most likely best, warehouse party this New Years Eve. It’s definitely not one to be missed. The first one was quite an experience. There’s something altogether exciting about getting a bus at 2am from the quays to a yet undisclosed location somewhere in the city. A [...]

Dublin Airport

I’ve been hearing lots of horror stories over the last week. One of my friend’s Fiona had a dreadful 53 hour trip from Paris. My brother just managed to get back over to London today. But there’s also been lots of tearful reunions at Dublin Airport. Also some hilarious moments. One of which was caught [...]
